I only want to go up a shade or two. I read somewhere that I can highlight my hair without using bleach...

You could always try using SunIn, or squeeze some lemon juice in your hair while you're in the sun. If you don't want either of those, just go to a hair salon and get a few lowlights in a lighter shade. Lowlights will make all of your hair look lighter.

if you hair has not been dyed ever (virgin hair) or any dyed hair has grown out then you can go a shade or 2 lighter. use a low ammonia dye. i cant remember the name of it but it is in a black box i think and is usually about $13. it has a neutral, warm and cool shade of each color. if your hair has been dyed it might not work.

and just for your info..all hair dye has bleach (peroxide) in it. to go lighter you need to take out the pigment . the exceptions are those bright colors like green and red and blue. they are deposit only meaning they do not lift any color.

anything you use to highlight your hair has bleach in it..when you highlight it's basically stripping your hair of its colour so you get the blonde...Loreal Colour Rays work really well...i can't think of the name but if you go into say....Walmart in the hairdye asile it's the orange box with the orange wand highlighting kit...they work really. well. i wouldn't frost your hair though...good luck
